(1) Governor John Henry was a lawyer, statesman, and governor. He was born in 1750 and died in 1798. John Henry was a member of the Continental Congress from 1777-1788, a member of the U. S. Senate from 1789-1797 and Governor of Maryland from 1797-1798. He was the son of Col. John and Dorothy Rider Henry. Gov. Henry married Margaret Campbell. the daughter of John and Elizabeth Goldsborough Campbell. There is a memorial monument to him in the graveyard at Christ Episcopal Church which says that Gov. John Henry is “Honored for His Wisdom and Political Integrity.” Gov. Henry was buried at his home Weston on the Nanticoke. It is believed that his grave was washed away through erosion.
(2) Governor Charles Goldsborough was born at Hunting Creek in 1764 and died in 1834. Gov. Goldsborough was educated at the College of Pennsylvania, now the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Maryland Senate, a member of the House of Delegates, a U. S. Representative and finally the Governor of Maryland in 1819. He was the son of Charles and Anna Maria Tilghman Goldsborough. Governor Goldsborough first married Elizabeth Goldsborough daughter of Judge Robert Goldsborough of Ashby in Talbot County and second married Sarah Yerbury Goldsborough daughter of Charles Goldsborough of Horns Point in Dorchester County. He is buried in the cemetery at Christ Episcopal Church.
(3) Governor Thomas King Carroll was born at Kingston Hall in Somerset County in 1793. A seasoned politician, he was the son of Col. Henry James and Elizabeth Barnes King Carroll. Gov. Carroll was admitted to the bar in 1814 and served Maryland in the House from 1816-1817; he was a member of the Levy Court and Orphan’s Court in Somerset County and Governor from 1830-1831. He moved to Dorchester County in 1840. Governor Carroll married Julianna Stevenson daughter of Dr. Henry and Anne Henry Stevenson. He died at Walnut Landing in Dorchester County in 1873 and is buried in the Old Trinity Episcopal Churchyard.
(4) Governor Thomas Holiday Hicks was born in 1798 the son of Henry C. and Mary Sewell Hicks. Governor Hicks served as a town constable, sheriff, member of the House, register of wills, and governor from 1858-1862. As a wartime governor, he was credited with holding Maryland in the union during the Civil War. He was also a U.S. senator from 1863-1865. President Lincoln visited Hicks, then a U. S. Senator, just two days before he died on February 13, 1865. He married first Ann Thompson, second Leah Raleigh, and third Mrs. Jane Wilcox. Governor Hicks is buried in the Cambridge Cemetery.
(5) Governor Henry Lloyd lived from 1852 to 1920. He was a member of the Maryland State Senate from 1882-1884, Governor of Maryland from 1885-1888 and a Circuit Court Judge from 1892-1908. He was the son of Daniel and Catherine Henry Lloyd. Governor Lloyd’s paternal grandfather was Governor Edward Lloyd and maternal great grandfather was Governor John Henry. Governor Henry Lloyd is buried at Christ Church and his inscription reads “The strife is o’er, the battle done. The victory of life is won. The song of triumph has begun. Requiescat in Pace.”
(6) Governor Phillips Lee Goldsborough lived from 1865 to 1946 and was State Comptroller in 1897 and Governor of Maryland from 1912-1916. He was a U. S. Senator from 1929-1935. While governor, Goldsborough’s term of office is credited with improvements in the school laws and the creation of the Workman’s Compensation Commission. He was the son of Worthington and Henrietta Maria Jones Goldsborough. Governor Goldsborough married Ellen Showell the daughter of William and Nancy LeFevre Showell of Worcester County. He is buried in the cemetery of Christ Church.
(7) Governor Emerson Columbus Harrington lived
from 1864-1945. He was State Comptroller in 1911, and Governor of Maryland
from 1916-1920. Governor Harrington organized the Council of Defense during
World War I and the State Parole Board was adopted during his tenure. Governor
Harrington was considered one of the outstanding trial lawyers of the State
of Maryland. He was born at Madison, Dorchester County, the son of John
E. and Annie Thompson Harrington. Governor Harrington married Mary Gertrude
Johnson, the daughter of William Thomas and Mariah Jane Woodland Johnson.
